This has launched innovation into a period of rapid growth, with Canada showing great potential, ranking 2nd on the 2021 Global Cleantech Innovation Index (GCII). Through technological innovation, environmental technologies and energy storage technologies are becoming increasingly impactful and practical. Additionally, advancements in the industry have led to more carbon neutral practices, for example, E-Cycling. Strategic Innovation Fund – Stream 4 (Collaborative Technology Development and Demonstration) The Strategic Innovation Fund supports businesses with large projects in innovation efforts that have commercialization potential. This stream supports research and large-scale technology demonstrations. Canada-wide
NRC-IRAP IRAP supports the innovation efforts of small and medium-sized Canadian enterprises with projects that strive to solve internal challenges that lead to new products, enhanced productivity, or competitive advantages. This can include market assessment, technology validation, R&D technology development. Canada-wide
SR&ED The SR&ED/SRED program is a tax incentive program meant to encourage Canadian businesses to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada. The tax incentives come in three forms: an income tax deduction, an investment tax credit (ITC), and in certain circumstances, a refund. Canada-wide
Sustainable Development Technology Canada This program supports Canadian companies in their efforts to develop and demonstrate new environmental technologies that address climate change, clean air, clean water, and clean soil. Canada-wide
Strategic Innovation Fund – Stream 1 (R&D and Commercialization) The Strategic Innovation Fund supports businesses with large projects in innovation efforts that have commercialization potential. This stream focuses on R&D that will accelerate technology transfer and commercialization of innovative products, processes, and services. Canada-wide
Strategic Innovation Fund – Stream 2 (Firm Expansion and Growth) The Strategic Innovation Fund supports businesses with large projects in innovation efforts that have commercialization potential. This stream supports expansion or material improvement of existing industrial/ technological facilities or projects. Canada-wide

Alberta Innovates – Commercialization Associates This program provides funding to businesses to enable them to hire a commercialization professional to advance their business readiness level and accelerate commercialization. AB
Innovative Solutions Canada This program has rotating challenges that call for projects to conduct research and development and testing of prototypes in real-life settings. Canada-wide
Alberta Innovates – Voucher Program This program supports projects that aim to de-risk feasible technological solutions, support emerging technologies and increase the development and implementation of innovative technology products that can generate economic, social, and environmental benefit for Albertans. Alberta Innovates – Industry R&D Associates Program This program provides funding to businesses to enable them to hire a research and development professional to advance their technology in order to accelerate commercialization. AB
Alberta Innovates – Bio Energy This program encourages the development, adaption, and deployment of innovative clean technologies. Focus is placed on activities that can reduce environmental impacts, support Alberta's energy transition, generate jobs in clean tech economy, and engage industry researchers and communities to participate in their future energy systems. Alberta Innovates – Innovative Hydrocarbon Products This program consists of three sub-programs aimed to diversify Alberta's economy and add value to hydrocarbon resources that will enable Alberta to achieve prosperity in a low carbon, global economy. AB
Alberta Innovates – Land and Biodiversity The aim of this program is to ensure the sustainability of natural resource development operations and practices. This program includes sub-programs related to environmental monitoring, oil sands tailings remediation and restoration, climate adaptation, and a new initiative on abandoned well reclamation. AB
Alberta Innovates – Renewable and Alternative Energy This program has a focus on electricity generation and grid modernization to support renewable and alternative energy development systems. AB
Southwestern Ontario Development Fund (SWODF) This program is aimed to support economic development in southwestern Ontario by supporting projects that create jobs, attract private sector investment, lead to business growth, and encourage innovation. ON
Next Generation Networks (NGN) Demonstration This program supports Ontario businesses to use the CENGN testbed to further develop proof-of-concept or demonstrations that could lead to new technologies, products, or services. ON
South Ontario Fund for Investment in Innovation This program supports high-growth, innovative small- or medium-sized organizations to increase their growth and innovation. Activities include late-stage commercialization; development or implementation of new technologies, products, services, or processes; and new applications/markets. ON
OCI – Voucher with Innovation and Productivity (VIP) This program funds collaborative innovation efforts between Ontario businesses and post-secondary institutions. These projects should generate economic benefits for Ontario’s businesses in a short-term time frame. ON
Hydro-Québec Technology and Business Demonstration Program This program provides support for projects that test the technical or commercial viability of innovative, energy-saving, or power demand optimization measures. QC
NOHFC INVEST North Program – Innovation Stream This program supports applied research and development projects, and projects which aim to demonstrate and commercialize new and innovative technologies. ON
Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) Program The focus of this program is to invest in innovative technologies that will contribute to a more diversified, higher value product mix in the forest sector. Canada-wide
NSERC Alliance This program encourages partnerships between organizations and university researchers to generate new knowledge and create benefits to Canada. Canada-wide
CAP Technology Solutions This program supports projects that focus on piloting and demonstrating new and innovative technologies related to labour-saving technologies or practices, waste reduction, and/or increased efficiency. ON
CAP Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program (CASPP) This program supports projects that address national or sector-wide priorities that help the agricultural industry address emerging issues and capitalize on opportunities. Canada-wide
CAP Place to Grow: Agri-Food Innovative Initiative This program focuses on collaborative projects that will accelerate the creation and adoption of innovative solutions to sector challenges and advance sector opportunities to increase competition and sustainability. CAP Emerging Opportunities This program aims to support Alberta's strategic objectives related to growth and development of Alberta's value-added agriculture sector. This program is currently closed. AB
Ocean Supercluster This program is aimed to bring together organizations from all sectors to develop and commercialize globally-relevant ocean solutions. This program is currently closed. Canada-wide
Canada Ontario Job Grant This program helps employers invest in training for current and future employees, with the goal of increasing Ontario’s labour force through skill development. Through this program, the employer applies on behalf of their employee(s) for eligible training costs. ON
NRC IRAP – Funding to Hiring Young Graduates This program focuses on supporting companies in hiring youth workers (age between 15-30 years) to contribute to their innovation efforts. The internships should be 6-12 months in length and within Canada; the program will share a portion of the salary costs, not including overhead costs and incentives Canada-wide
Magnet Student Work Placement Program The Student Work Placement program connects employers, students, and post-secondary school stakeholders to create quality work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities. The student can be from any program of study, and there is no restriction on the type of position.   Canada-wide
Talent Opportunities Program (TOP) This program connects employers, students, and post-secondary school stakeholders to create quality work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities. The placement must be a “Net New” placement which are positions that are incremental and are above what employers were able to hire the year before at the similar time. Canada-wide
The Technation Career Ready Program (formerly ITAC) This program supports businesses by helping finance the hire of a student for a work-term placement. Technation support any tech-immersive roles. You do not need to be a tech company to provide tech skills development. Canada-wide
ICTC’s WIL Digital This program offers subsidies to employers who create work opportunities for students. WIL Digital creates industry-education partnerships and explores innovative work-integrated learning models. Canada-wide
ECO Canada Student Work Placement Program This program is a part of Government of Canada’s Student Work Placement Program (SWAPP). It is targeted to the positions in the environmental sector and students in a STEM, arts, or business program. Net new refers to positions that are incremental and are above what employers were able to hire the year before at the similar time. Canada-wide
Level UP STEM Projects This program allows employers to bring on Canadian post-secondary students for 80-hour paid STEM projects. Canada-wide
Co-Operative Education Tax Credit This tax credit is applied for along with corporate taxes. For any prior year tax credits that were not applied for, an amendment can be requested within 3 years of the initial assessment. This program applies to students that are hired in a co-op program from an Ontario university/college. Canada-wide
Canada Alberta Job Grant This program helps employers finance training for current and future employees, in hopes to increase Alberta’s labour force through skill development. Through this program, the employer applies on behalf of their employee(s) for eligible training costs. AB
Digital Skills for Youth Program ECO Canada This program offers funding for employers who are hiring youth who are unemployed or underemployed post-secondary graduates. The goal is to promote the development of digital and soft skills through work experience and training. Funding is available for positions with a Digital Skill focus in the environmental sector. Canada Summer Jobs Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market. Canada-wide
Mitacs Accelerate This program aims to connect top-ranked research talent with industrial partners to help solve the company’s research challenges. Internships must be 4 months at minimum and can be scaled up as needed. Canada-wide
ICTC’s Digital Skills for Youth Program This program connects Canadian employers with university and college graduates between 18-30 years old to receive training and meaningful work experience to help transition to full-time employment. This program is currently closed. Canada-wide
Youth Employment Placement Program This program supports the hire of youth (e.g. 30 years old or younger) in STEM or natural resources related roles in the environmental sector. The funding is for paid full-time work terms between 6-12 months in length. This program is currently closed. Canada-wide
NSERC Engage This program provides businesses knowledge, expertise and capabilities available from Canadian universities and colleges. These grants are intended to foster the development of new research partnerships by supporting short-term research and development projects aimed at addressing a company-specific problem. Canada-wide
Industry Commercialization Associates Program This program was created to assist Alberta small or medium-sized businesses commercialize innovative technologies. The program financially supports employees with expertise in commercializing novel technology. AB
NOHFC People and Talent Program – Workforce Development Stream The People & Talent Program is designed to attract, retain and develop Northern Ontario’s workforce. This program is meant to strengthen and develop Northern Ontario’s workforce through business partnerships by offering internships. ON
NOHFC People and Talent Program – Indigenous Workforce Development Stream The People & Talent Program is designed to attract, retain and develop Northern Ontario’s workforce. This program is meant to strengthen and develop Northern Ontario’s Indigenous workforce through business partnerships by offering internships to Indigenous persons. ON
FedDev Ontario – Business Scale Up and Productivity  This program supports business efforts to adopt/ adapt new, innovative technologies to help accelerate growth. The program hopes to assist in scale-up/ expansion, commercialization of new technologies, adaption/ adoption of leading-edge technologies/ processes, market diversification. ON
Canada Small Business Financing Program  This funding is provides loans to for-profit, small, Canadian businesses with gross revenues of $10 million or less. There is a registration fee associated with the program (2% of the loan) that can be included in the loan. This program is delivered and approved by financial institutions, and then they will register the loan with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. Canada-wide
CME Technology Assessment Program (TAP) The Technology Assessment Program connects SME’s manufacturers in southern Ontario manufacturers with qualified experts to get customized technology assessments. ON
Manitoba Industrial Opportunities Program (MIOP) This program supports business in Manitoba expand or relocate within the province by providing repayable funding. BC, MB, SK
Market Readiness Program (OCE) On behalf of the Government of Ontario, OCI supports early-stage companies that are raising pre-seed and seed investments (total round sizes range from $500,000 to $2 million). Market Readiness is a competitive co-investment fund. ON
NOHFC INVEST North Program – Grow Stream The Invest North Program is designed to boost economic growth in Northern Ontario by encouraging businesses to invest in transformative, strategic and complementary business development opportunities in Northern communities. The program will support productivity, innovation, business competitiveness, revenue growth, export capacity development, job creation and retention. ON
CanExport SMEs This program supports small- to medium-sized enterprises collaborating with foreign partners in R&D efforts to co-develop, validate, or adapt their technologies for commercialization. Canada-wide
CanExport Innovation This program supports small or medium-sized businesses in introducing their product/service to new international markets. Canada-wide
Alberta Export Expansion Program This program supports small- or medium-sized organizations in Alberta promoting Alberta exports. This program is currently closed. AB
Alberta Innovates – Export Readiness Micro-Voucher The goal of this program is to help Alberta small or medium-sized businesses hire a service provider to help build a strategic approach to enter global markets. AB
Soft Landing Program This program is aimed to support Canadian businesses open in new markets, close international sales, secure investments, and connect with new partners by providing reimbursements for foreign travel costs. This program is currently closed. Canada-wide

Ag Action Manitoba  – Research and Innovation The Research and Innovation activity provides grants to eligible applicants for applied research, capacity building and knowledge transfer projects that advance the growth and sustainability of the agriculture industry by fast-tracking the pace of innovation.
